On my first ever trip to New York City I stumbled across these old trolley rails on Plymouth Street in Brooklyn. The thing I liked about these tracks is that they are set in a cobblestone street. This whole thing was left alone, and looks as it did when the trolley ran. These lines (and the cobblestone) run between Bridge Street and Main Street. On the way they pass under the Brooklyn Bridge and take detours down Jay Street, Anchorage St, and Adams St. The rails disappear from Plymouth between Jay and Anchorage then curve down Main St at the end of Plymouth.
If you study the paths the tracks are taking, it's easy to tell what was added to the city after trolleys were retired.
There are also rails in the road in Providence, Rhode Island on Allens Ave. between 173 Allens Ave. to Thurbers Ave. However, I don't believe these were trolley lines. The tracks are in a harbor area, so I have a feeling these were once freight or passenger lines. Additionally, the rails do not have the same profile as the ones in Brooklyn. Trolley lines have an inside lip to keep the wheel flange from hitting the roadway.] I used to drive over these rails a lot in college.
The trolley lines in Brooklyn were the inspiration behind this section of my website. As I travel to new places, I always seem to find something related to the railroad. So, I do my best to document what I see on my trip so I can share it here.
