Today I built the boiler for Toby's interior. When I build a model like this I do it in cardboard first then in the final material - in this case, styrene. These pictures [below] are actually a bit misleading; the boiler will sit up about 7mm from the sub-floor. So, there will be a little more space for the battery and wiring than it looks. I also decided that I want to repaint the inside of the original shell a brown, similar to that of the outside. The cab floors will be a rusty red color for a bit of contrast and the boiler will be black. I also want to detail the boiler as much as possible. I know the shape of the boiler is wrong for a prototypical 0-6-0 J70 steam tram (what Toby is based on). But, since I have to hide the battery pack the shape is necessary. So, if I can give either end a few details in the same fashion that the 1:1 locos looked, I'll be very happy. Based on these two photos, those details will include the hand wheels, doors for fire and smoke box (either end), perhaps a pipe or two running the length of the boiler, a couple round gauges, a water gauge, and brake. A few of the details I'm thinking I will include are steam gauges and hand wheels, both from Ozark Miniatures.
