As of tomorrow I'll have all the track I need to complete the second track around Piscine Loop. When I return from my vacation next week I'll be working on the Railroad until it's done! In light of that, I've spent the last few days working on my yard design for the next section of the LHRR. A working yard will mean that I can be fully active with my trains even though my RR only has a double loop. So, I did some research (including talking to friends online) and drew up a design... There are several rules one should observe when designing a yard. This design disobeys one of the biggest: Do not foul the main! This basically means that the mainline should be kept clear when a switcher is working. However, my design using the Southbound Main as a lead when the switcher has to move a car from one classification track to another or cross to the Piscine Loop-bound A/D track. This was the biggest problem with my design, according to members of Large Scale Central, where I posted the photo and asked for opinions. So, I made a few modifications. After trying out three different track patterns above the T, I settled on this... This yard design created a (probably odd) traffic pattern where a loco coming to collect a train from the top A/D siding has to transverse the wye to get there. However, since the Loco shed is going to be on the southbound track to the left, that is okay. The loco can head north on the wye, and back into the A/D track, crossing both mains.
I decided on this pattern because my other two options either a) made the A/D track skip the wye or b) created a double s-curve, which I knew would cause problems. This design gives slightly more interesting operation possibilities. In addition to that change, a yard lead was added to the east and the ladder was moved to branch off the lead, instead of off the mainline. In my test designs there was also a caboose siding coming off the yard lead. But, I removed it. I don't have need for more than 1 caboose, based on what I'm planning to model. I suppose the switcher does need a loco shed... Damn. Well, I'll work that in later!
